Does cosmetic dentistry require specialized training?

Currently, the American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a type of dentistry specialization and unfortunately, there are no restrictions on a dentist saying they are a ‘cosmetic dentist’.

HOWEVER, you should very carefully scrutinize your potential cosmetic dentist to find out what type of training and experience they have with the various types of cosmetic dental procedures.  Because it does require some specialized skill and training, it’s advisable that you choose a cosmetic dentist that has a decent sized portfolio of results they can show you before you commit to any type of procedure.

How much does cosmetic dentistry cost?

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to say exactly how much a particular cosmetic dentistry procedure costs simply because there are so many variables for each procedure.

For example, issues like the severity of the problem being corrected, the type of procedure being performed, and the cosmetic dentist you select to perform the procedure are all factors that will play into the final cost of your specific procedure.

How can I know if I’m getting the best?

First off, the definition of ‘best’ is somewhat subjective as each individual person has different wants, needs, and priorities when it comes to their cosmetic dental care.  However, there are certain elements that should remain consistent across all cosmetic dentists that will help you determine which one is BEST for you.

For example, you’ll definitely want to find out if the cosmetic dentists’ office has the type of atmosphere you’re looking for.  Is it relaxing, calming, and something you’d enjoy visiting?  Or is it cold, clinical, and a place you’d feel nervous and anxious going to?

Another important factor is the cosmetic dentist him or herself. What’s their level of training?  How many years have they been in practice?  What’s their personality like? What’s their ‘bed-side’ manner like?  How well do your personalities mesh?

Next, what types of procedures do they offer? Do they present a wide variety of cosmetic dental choices, or are you forced to choose between 1 or 2 procedures?  The more options you have, the more flexibility you’ll have in terms of pricing and expected outcomes.

Finally, what do previous patients say about a particular cosmetic dentist? Are they willing to share their experiences with you, the good, the bad, and the ugly?  What do their results look like?  Does it look like the cosmetic dentist has done a good job?

Remember, everyone’s preferences and selection criteria are different so you need to decide for yourself what those criteria are.
